Repatriation support for asylum seekers who have been rejected or who have retracted their application for asylum

If you have received a refusal of asylum, or you have retracted your application for asylum, you may apply for repatriation support.

The following persons may apply for repatriation support; see section 8(2)(1) of the Danish Act regarding the Return of Foreign Nationals with No Leave to Stay (hjemrejseloven):

"... a foreign national staying in Denmark and who is a registered asylum seeker and whose application for asylum has been refused by the Immigration Service or the Refugee Appeals Board, or who has retracted an application for asylum."

Applicable practice allows for individuals, who held a residence permit on asylum grounds but are now expelled by judgment, to apply for repatriation support.

The amounts for which you may apply:

  • You may apply for up DKK 20,000 if you cooperate on preparing your departure.
  • You may apply for a lower amount of up to DKK 15,000 if you have not initially cooperated on preparing your departure but do so later.

Repatriation support is granted as:

  • Cash repatriation support (support paid out in cash) or
  • In-kind repatriation support (support not paid out in cash but through a re-integration partner).

You cannot personally choose which form of repatriation support to receive, cash or in-kind.

Repatriation support will always be granted as in-kind repatriation support if there is a re-integration partner in the country concerned. After your return, you will be required to work with the re-integration partner to draw up a re-integration plan setting out what needs have to be met for you to establish a sustainable life in your local community.

The Danish immigration authorities must then approve your re-integration plan, after which your in-kind return journey aid will be paid out through the re-integration partner direct to the approved activities.

Repatriation support with supplementary cash amounts:

If you wish to retract your asylum application after the Immigration Service has decided to refuse asylum, you can apply for repatriation support with supplementary cash amounts.

If you receive a decision from the Immigration Service refusing your asylum application, you will be called for a ‘reflection’ interview with the Danish Return Agency.*

At this interview, you will be informed about your options as regards your asylum case and your options for applying for repatriation support with supplementary cash amounts if you choose to retract your asylum application.

The amounts for which you may apply:

  • If you retract your asylum application within 14 days of receiving the Immigration Service’s decision to refuse asylum, you may apply for up to DKK 20,000 in supplementary cash amounts. In addition, you automatically apply for up to DKK 20,000 in return journey aid.
You therefore apply for a total of up to DKK 40,000 in repatriation support.

  • If you retract your asylum application later than 14 days after receiving the Immigration Service’s decision to refuse asylum, you may apply for up to DKK 10,000 in supplementary cash amounts. In addition, you automatically apply for up to DKK 20,000 in return journey aid.
You therefore apply for a total of up to DKK 30,000 in repatriation support.

The supplementary cash amounts will always be paid out in cash while repatriation support is granted as:

*You will not be called for a ‘reflection’ interview if the Danish Immigration Service made the decision to refuse asylum according to the manifestly unfounded procedure or expedited version of the manifestly unfounded procedure. If your application for asylum was processed according to the Immigration Service’s manifestly unfounded procedure, in the event of a refusal, you can apply for repatriation support without supplementary cash amounts. You cannot apply for repatriation support if the Immigration Service processed your asylum application according to the expedited version of the manifestly unfounded procedure.
